Eden Schroeder: Tender Belly's Athlete of the Month June 2024

Eden Schroeder, a quadriplegic, has found immense joy and purpose through adaptive sports. She has embraced snow skiing, water skiing, and hand cycling, loving every challenge and triumph that each one brings.

However, her true passion lies in competitive para swimming. Returning to competition and athleticism after her injury has profoundly benefited her mental and physical health. Adaptive sports play a vital role in the disabled community, and Eden is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to experience and excel in so many of them.

Rapid Fire Questions

What is your WHY/Your mission?
I hope to show other people with disabilities that there are so many ways to be active; you just have to find the right resources!

Some causes/non-profits that you support?
The Shepherd Center has allowed me to experience so many adaptive sports and find my travel to para swim meet across the country. I am extremely grateful to them!

The team at Bike-On has gifted me a hand cycle that has allowed me to get back to "running" with my friends and cross train for swimming.

High Fives Foundation has gifted me mountain bike tires for my hand cycle which has allowed me to get back to doing things outside!

Confidence. You only have one life to live so get out there and make it worth it!

Thinking about my health. I want to live a long life and staying active is part of it!

How do you define happiness, and have you found it?
Being content with yourself and the people around you. Definitely have found it!

What do you think the biggest misconception is as it relates to para sports?
That it's easy or "not as impressive" as able-bodied sports. It's the opposite. We have to fight through the physical and mental hardships of having a disability while also competing against other athletes.

Equal representation for athletes of all disabilities. Especially those of higher physical impairment.

What do you think is the most important lesson that sports can teach us about life and how have you applied that lesson?
The people you have in your life are the most important thing about living. I've surrounded myself with people who support me everyday despite the challenges that I face.

Having a disability gives a perspective needed in society. #universaldesign2025
