Tender Belly Triathlete Ben Hoffman to Compete in IRONMAN World Championships

Tender Belly, a purveyor of all-natural heritage breed pork products, announced today that sponsored athlete Ben Hoffman will engage in the ultimate battle of strength by competing in the IRONMAN World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on Oct. 11, fueled, of course, by Tender Belly pork products. Hoffman joins more than 2,000 athletes as they embark on a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2 marathon run along the Kona Coast on Hawaii’s Big Island – the ultimate test of mind, body and spirit. Athletes representing 68 countries and territories on six continents will compete in this year’s IRONMAN World Championship – with athletes ranging in age from 18 to 84. As a professional triathlete, Hoffman got his start in college, but said he’s always been competitive and athletic, playing soccer, golf, basketball, running track, and rock climbing and hiking. In college, he looked for something new to do and joined the triathlon team, which lead him to win a national title as a senior individual and well as the national team title. Since 2007 when he joined the pro ranks, Hoffman has earned IRONMAN, Half-Ironman and National Champion victories, spending the majority of his training between his home base of Boulder, Co., and Tucson, Ariz. The Hawaii competition marks the culmination of the season for Hoffman, and the majority of his time has been focused on training and mental preparation for the race. “Prepping for a race like this is a combination of always thinking about it – finding the right line of thinking so that it’s not constantly overwhelming you or stressing you out, but motivating you,” Hoffman said. “I also draw a lot of confidence from the training that I do so that there’s no question that I did everything I could to prepare in the best possible way. That puts me in a good mental place.” Hoffman admits that a large part of his training involved nutrition and he said Tender Belly is a staple in his training diet plan. “A huge part of my job is fueling during training, as well as during recovery periods – and the bacon and pork products Tender Belly produces is good, clean eating,” Hoffman said. “It’s important to know the origins of the meat and the people producing it – and I know I’m refueling with the best possible protein.” “We are so excited to help send Ben to the World Championships in Hawaii and to be a loyal supporter of such a world-class athlete,” says Shannon Duffy, owner, Tender Belly. “Tender Belly strives to be a great option for people who need the best possible pork products in their diet and we can’t think of a better way to support athletes than to provide 100 percent vegetarian-fed, organic and free-to-roam pigs to nourish them during their extensive training.” Tender Belly pork products are procured using environmentally responsible and fully traceable methods. The animals are fed a 100% vegetarian diet — with no rendered animal byproducts, antibiotics or hormones, and live with plenty of space to roam. As part of its focus on farm-to-table cuisine and local purveyors, Tender Belly partners with a wide network of family-run, co-op farmers across the country to supply it with the finest meats available.
